On Being Cultural

It's often easy to forget all the wonderful and exciting things one's hometown or city has to offer. When work and errands consume a life, it's hard to make time for plays, festivals, events and sightseeing.

Life is busy. It's monotonous, hectic, and often, tiring. With all this, who has time to do something out of the ordinary to break up the monotony and make it fun. I know I usually don't.

That's why I like to make "to-do" lists. I made one for Summer 2011, which was more or less successful. I make visions boards as New Years Resolutions. And, last year, I made a DC To-Do List.

I started off at full speed knocking things off the list. Then I stopped. Work, responsibilities, travel, errands, visitors, family obligations, (really, just life), got in the way. But the last couple of weeks I have really been working to knock some things off this list.

First, Peter and I went to Mount Vernon. We checked out George Washington's mansion on the Potomac. Watched an awesome entertaining ridiculous 15 minute film on his life. Saw GW's tomb and walked around his plantation.

Then, Meghan invited me to see the opening of The Heir Apparent at the Shakespeare Theatre Company. It included a free dinner, so naturally, I was in. It was really funny and cute. We were pleasantly surprised.

Then, the following day, Meg and I went to the Kennedy Center for the Millennium Stage series. It's a year long series that has a free show every day at 6:00 p.m. They are even webcasted live. It was a short performance and was definitely a nice break from the normal week.

So, all in all, I've been a pretty cultural person lately. It's been a nice reminder that life doesn't just have to be about work or school or the normal day-to-day. It can be fun and interesting and exciting. Seeing these news things, and in the DC area, has been a great way to clear my head and think about something other than work.

Now some photos from Mount Vernon.

View of Potomac from the mansion. Did I mention it was a beautiful day?

Trying to get a jumping picture in the garden. It didn't work.
